Director of Communications

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Communications develops and guides a communications program that employs effective tactics to support and extend the School of the Osage mission and to promote a collaborative environment. The Director serves as a liaison between the school district, parents, students, patrons, employees and public or private agencies. The Director is responsible to manage the district’s brand identity with internal and external audiences by managing a multifaceted communications strategy.
DEGREES REQUIRED OR
PREFERRED: Master’s degree in job-related area, preferred.
SALARY: Commensurate based on experience
CONTRACT TYPE: 12 months

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Direct the district's communications program by working with the board of education and superintendent to establish and execute annual objectives aligned to the district’s cultural and strategic plans and initiatives.
- Manage communications within the district and the community to promote district accomplishments and opportunities.
- Contribute accurate, timely, and interesting content for school and district website, newsletters, social media and other communication channels.
- Enhance district accountability to the public by being a trustworthy source of information, maintaining open lines of communication, and building relationships that support students.
- Proactively monitor and manage district social media presence.
- Manage all media relations, including the production and distribution of news releases, press conferences and proactive engagement of all media.
- Oversight of all requests for public information, including assisting in requests made under the Missouri Sunshine Law.
- Support principals and directors with effective school- to- home and school- to- community communication.
- Supervise and coordinate the production of all district publications and communications platforms to include participatory media, marketing, media relations, crisis communications, internal communication and community partnerships.
- Supervise and coordinate the content and publication of handbooks (student, staff, athletics, safety, transportation etc).
- Update and integrate safety and crisis communications plans in collaboration with district safety officials.
- Act as an official spokesperson for the district; serve as the first point of contact for school communication queries.
- To stay informed and provide information, attend a variety of meetings from around the district, for example administrative meetings, Osage Family Partnership meetings, building-staff level meetings, safety meetings, etc.
- Correlate communications and talking points with secretarial staff.
- Advance student voice via support and strategy for student publications.
- Stay current with professional practices in the field through participation in state and national organizations such as Missouri School Public Relations Association.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
